Owning Your Success

I can’t stress how important this message has become in my life.  I always used to question whether I was good enough.  Did I have what it takes to succeed in this industry?  Admittedly, along the way, I have also questioned, “am I in the RIGHT industry”?  Fortunately, I have a curated support network that is always encouraging and motivating me to celebrate my success and stay focused on remaining ‘awesome’.

‘Owning Your Success’ is the ability to humbly celebrate the journey you have taken to build your business, implement its sustainability, refine it, and constantly evaluate it.  We all know how hard the journey was, can be, or will be.  Your success represents your resilience towards the countless hours of dedication put towards honing your craft, time away from friends and family, overnight tear-downs, loading trucks, managing client expectations, and staying up all night working on proposals or production schedules.  As event entrepreneurs, we wear many hats and we do it well.

There is nothing wrong about ‘Owning Your Success’.  It doesn’t make you an arrogant person.  As a talented event professional, concentrate on continually bettering yourself, and less on what others think of you.  Stay focused on your business and your clients.  Success will follow.

The ability to own your success also comes with the responsibility of celebrating the success of others.  As an industry, we are stronger if we can give our peers the recognition that they deserve and be genuinely happy for them.  Too often, we become envious of the success of others that we allow ourselves to shut down and stunt our own business growth, development, and creativity.  It also effects our friendships and relationships.  Unfortunately, we only hurt ourselves.

This weekend, write a list of all your accomplishments.  You will be pleasantly surprised.

Be proud, stand tall, and OWN your success!


Speaking Engagement: EventConnect GTA

I am so honoured to be a part of the panel of speakers at EventConnect GTA!  I will join Trevor Lui, Director of Operations and Sustainability at the International Centre and Sandy Biback, CMP, CMM, and owner of Imagination+Meeting Planners.  Together, we will discuss ‘Finding Success in the Events Industry’ followed by a Q&A component.

The event takes place on February 20, 2013 at Brassaii Restaurant & Lounge in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  My good friend Moriah Bacus of Define Events designed this event to be a great networking opportunity for attendees, provide education on topics relevant to event professionals, and lastly, as a platform for emerging planners and designers to receive hands-on event experience.  Moriah and her talented planning team look forward to hosting over 125 guests at this years event.

As one of Canada’s foremost brand designers, Laura K Beauparlant leads as the creative force behind Laura K Brand Design and Laura K Invitations.  As the brand designer for PARAS Events (which she masterfully developed in six short weeks!), I was very impressed with her design ability, exceptional client service, glowing personality, and true commitment to my project.  She responded to all my requests immediately, met all projected timelines, and delivered an exceptionally high quality product.

The Other Side of Our Re-Brand

I am so proud of our new re-branding.  Not only does it represent who we are as a company, our products, and our services, but aims to be a resource for couples and industry professionals with my insights and those of my colleagues in the events industry.

Putting myself out there with our new re-branding was a very revealing experience -both personally and professionally. Knowingly, I was opening myself up to both positive AND negative criticism.  In all my excitement with the project, I did not prepare myself for the emotional impact it would have on me as a person.  My mind was telling me “well, that’s business”, but at my core, there was a lot of fear of disapproval. This was a very unhealthy outlook, but something I couldn’t see past, at the time.

A lot of hard work was put into our re-branding efforts.  A committed team spent countless hours moulding the brand identity and vision of the company.  Our heart and soul went into everything.  In all the anticipation, excitement, and uncertainty at the time of the launch, I realized I had not mentally prepared myself for the intense reaction and response that the re-branding process would bring.  Within the first few days, I was pleased to receive an overwhelming amount of positive re-enforcement, recognition, and support…but what I wasn’t prepared for was the degree of negative criticism that I was about to be exposed to as well.  Turns out, it was devastating.

For those of you who know me well, it’s no secret that I bruise easily, especially because I always approach every situation with the best of intentions and always do my best to help others and foster camaraderie in our industry and my personal life.  I allow myself to become affected at the core when I feel a sense of failure and betrayal, but more importantly, when I feel my character as a person is being wrongly judged.

With this re-brand, I had emotionally exposed myself to the world because it represented ME as a designer, my ideals, and my personal aspirations.  I could no longer hide behind the ‘facade’ of a company.  I had put myself out there -completely out of my comfort zone- and completely open to direct criticism (positive and negative).  The big mistake here was allowing the success of my brand and its message to determine my self-worth.  I made it personal on a whole different level.

Now, I know better than to let an experience like this affect me the way it did.  How could I allow the messages of a few overshadow all the positive support I had received?  Like many of you, I am so attached to my company and my brand, that I couldn’t feel anything different but take it personally.  It took the help of my closest network of family and friends to understand why the re-branding process was positive even amongst the negativity I was experiencing.

I learned:

-that I would have to develop a ‘thick skin’ if I was going to put myself out there.  Not everyone was going to be my number one fan…and that was okay.  As long as I continued to share my skills and educate and inspire others to develop their careers, I was happy.

-that communication is key.  I could not let others distort my positive message or compromise my ethics.

-that having many ‘friends’ in the social media-sphere was not going to determine my success and that it was important to identify, acknowledge, and nurture my true support network and those that would always be there for me, no matter the circumstances.  I had to curate my network.

-that I should be extremely grateful for the opportunities that have been presented to me and stay focused on my personal success and self-development.  Getting distracted by the ‘industry noise’ was self-defeating.

This week, take a look at your business or brand.  Are you personally attached to it?  Let go of the notion that your brand or business defines you as a person and determines your personal self-worth.  Curate your network.  Most important of all, stay focused on your business goals and don’t let others steer your path.  Take ownership of your journey.
